Big Joe and the Dynaflows – You Can’t Keep a Big Man Down

You Can't Keep a Big Man Down showcases Big Joe Maher bluesy, swinging vocals and rock-solid drumming throughout 12 tracks, evenly split between originals and covers. From the opening notes of the rollicking Chicago-blues title track through the last note of the disc closing “What the Hell Were You Thinkin’?,” Big Joe constantly delivers the goods.

On songs like “Evangeline,” Joe channels the New Orleans vocal style of Fats Domino so well that it’s hard to conceive of the big vocalist not being African-American. As enjoyable as Joe’s vocals are throughout, the real firepower behind You Can't Keep a Big Man Down is The Dynaflows, a bad ass backing band that specializes in various blends of blues, including Texas blues heard on “Bad Case of Love” and the Kansas City jump-style of “Confessin' the Blues.”
