Van Pelt, a member of DIY party pop group Think About Life, leans in a more electronic direction here than on his 2007 Polaris Prize-nominated debut Five Roses, which garnered critical acclaim from SPIN, Paper, XLR8R and KEXP among others. Was I The Wave? is an album about alienation, anonymity, and the desire for intimacy. Thoughtfully arranged the music translates beautifully live.
Miracle Fortress performed as a duo at this year's SXSW '11, where the Austin Chronicle featured them as an "Ice Cream Man Friday Flavor Pick" noting, "I've been waiting for a new Miracle Fortress album for quite some time... I've listened to ['Five Roses'] more than almost any other since then. Really...ask my girlfriend." AOL Spinner said of their performance, "In a near-pitch black room, with only flickering laser lights outlining his body enough for the audience to see him...it played to the strength of the throbbing beats and helped create a distinct mood for Van Pelt's new found niche of late-night dance club soundtracks."
