GRACE POTTER JOINS DARYL HALL ON LIVE FROM DARYL’S HOUSE

There's a little bit of Paris and a lot of rock & roll when Hollywood Records recording group Grace Potter & the Nocturnals visit with Daryl Hall for the 45th and latest edition of Live From Daryl's House, premiering Aug. 15 exclusively at www.lfdh.com. This month's installment of the Webby and MTV O Music award-winning Internet series, which last year made its national television broadcast debut on WGN America to impressive ratings, will feature Potter, a collision of Tina Turner sass and vintage retro-glam, fronting the soul-infused, classic rock outfit with a decidedly modern bent. Formed at upstate New York's St. Lawrence University, based in Vermont, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals have received numerous critical accolades, including being named One of the Best Bands of 2010 by Rolling Stone magazine.

The group's self-titled album, their third major label release, produced by Mark Batson [Dave Matthews Band], featured the hit single "Paris (Ooh La La)," and debuted in the Top 20 on Billboard's Top 200, reaching #1 on the iTunes Rock Album chart.  GPN, known for playing over 200 shows a year, have built a loyal, dedicated fan base across the U.S. from their incendiary live concerts.

Potter recently made a special solo appearance at Los Angeles's famed Hollywood Bowl, performing with Stevie Wonder, Sharon Jones and Janelle MonĂ¡e, among others. This summer, GPN made their debut on Bonnaroo's main stage as well as at this year's Lollapolooza festival in Chicago. The band will promote their first-ever Grand Point North Festival in Burlington, VT, on Aug. 13-14, then cap it all with a headlining show in New York's Central Park Sept. 24.

The N.Y. Post called a recent GPN live show  "…a sizzling concert… the performance was a gripping moment in music where a girl and her band (who've enjoyed critical and cult admiration) showed they could hold their own with the biggest acts in music."

"Playing in Daryl Hall's living room is like stepping into a rock and roll time machine," raved Grace. "And then they feed you, which is awesome. Daryl went above and beyond to make us feel welcome; even satiating my eternal thirst for old guitars and good wine. He's a class act."

GPN joined Daryl to perform five songs from their self-titled release, including the serrated rock "Paris (Ooh La La)," which they performed recently on VH1's Divas telecast, along with "Money," "Goodbye Kiss," "Low Road" and "Things I Never Needed."

Hall and the band also collaborated on "Room to Breathe," a 1976 classic written by Daryl, which appeared on the Bigger Than the Both of Us album, as well as a soaring cover of Jimmy Cliff's reggae classic, "Many Rivers to Cross."

Says Daryl:  "Grace and the Nocturnals have the kind of classic-rock influences--including The Band, Little Feat, JJ Cale, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison and Bob Dylan—that are very familiar to me, having experienced that era. We had a great time playing together."

The past four years have marked a steady stream of superlatives and recognition for Live from Daryl's House, with Hall receiving a Webby Award for Best Variety series from more than 10,000 entries before garnering an O Music Award from MTV earlier this year.

The 44 previous episodes of Live From Daryl's House have featured a mix of well-known performers Booker T Jones, Rob Thomas, Train, Smokey Robinson, The Doors' Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek, TootsHibbert, Nick Lowe, K.T. Tunstall, Todd RundgrenTravie McCoy, Dave Stewart, Goo Goo Dolls' John Rzeznik and Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump along with newcomers such as Mayer Hawthorne, Eric Hutchinson, Chromeo, Cash Money rocker Kevin Rudolf, Matt Nathanson, Parachute, Plain White T's, Eli "Paperboy" Reed, soul diva Sharon Jones, Diane Birch, L.A. neo-R&B party band Fitz & the Tantrums, hot new alternative band Neon Trees and veteran alternative mainstays Guster.

Daryl launched the free monthly web series in November, 2007, after having the light-bulb idea of "playing with my friends and putting it up on the Internet," and the show has since garnered acclaim from Rolling Stone, SPIN, Daily Variety, CNN, BBC, Yahoo! Music and influential blogger Bob Lefsetz, who have cited Live From Daryl's House as a perfect example of a veteran artist reinventing himself in the digital age by collaborating with both established and newer performers. The show marked its broadcast debut New Year's Eve on Superstation WGN America, where it improved ratings for the time period by almost 75%.

Daryl also recently performed a live version of the show with friend and former LFDH guest, Todd Rundgren, to a sold out venue in Atlantic City.

Glen Campbell appears on ABC World News with Diane Sawyer; New CD out August 30

Legendary musician Glen Campbell has announced a number of appearances surrounding the arrival of his remarkable new Surfdog Records release, Ghost On The Canvas.  The album - which marks the iconic singer/guitarist/songwriter's final studio recording - arrives everywhere on August 30th.

Campbell will discuss the album, as well as his recent diagnoses of early stages of Alzheimer's Disease, in an exclusive interview with ABC News' Terry Moran, slated to air tomorrow, August 23 (6:30pm EST) on World News with Diane Sawyer.  The interview will be followed by Nightline the same night (11:35pm) and the next day on Good Morning America.  In addition, the multiple Grammy Award-winner will herald Ghost On The Canvas with an array of live TV performances, including NBC's The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on September 12th and ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live! on September 27th.

Ghost On The Canvas sees Campbell capping his brilliant career with one of his most moving and energized works to date, a powerfully emotional song cycle that sees him accompanied by a truly dazzling line-up of songwriters and musicians.  Among the tunesmiths contributing original songs to the collection are such modern luminaries as Paul Westerberg, Jakob Dylan, Robert Pollard, and Teddy Thompson, backed by a roster of players that includes Chris Isaak, Dick Dale, Billy Corgan, Brian Setzer, Rick Nielsen, Roger Manning, and The Dandy Warhols.  The album is produced by Julian Raymond, who also co-wrote a number of new songs with Campbell.

Ghost On The Canvas has already earned early praise from Rolling Stone which calls the disc "powerful" and England's Uncut, which awarded the album four-out-of-five stars while applauding Campbell's "majestic storytelling" and "soaring vocal(s)."  In addition, Associated Press hailed a recent Campbell concert in Biloxi, Mississippi - his first live date since announcing his illness - as no less than "a triumph," noting that "the 75-year-old Campbell brought the crowd to its feet after acing the delicate runs in the middle of his classic 'Wichita Lineman.'"

Campbell will celebrate the new album - as well as his extraordinary five-decade-plus career - with a valedictory concert tour, dubbed "The Glen Campbell Goodbye Tour."  Among the highlights is a hugely anticipated show at Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre, set for October 6th.  Campbell will then travel to England, Ireland and Scotland for a major series of dates, including an October 22nd concert at London's Royal Festival Hall.  A slate of additional shows will be announced shortly.

* * * * *

For more than fifty years, Glen Campbell has been among popular music's most successful and significant artists, a multi-talented superstar who can rightfully be declared a living legend and a true American treasure.  The Arkansas-born Campbell took up guitar at an early age and in 1958, relocated to Los Angeles where he immediately became an in-demand session musician.  He joined forces with the legendary Wrecking Crew, a group of session players whose work can be heard on a stunning range of recordings spanning TV themes, film scores, and commercial jingles, to artists including Frank Sinatra, The Monkees, Simon & Garfunkel, Elvis Presley, and most famously the producer, Phil Spector, with whom they helped create the famed "Wall of Sound." In 1964, Campbell was invited to become a touring member of The Beach Boys, playing bass and singing falsetto harmonies, then later contributing guitar to 1966's seminal Pet Sounds.

Campbell achieved his first major success as a solo artist with "Gentle On My Mind," which proved a crossover smash upon its 1967 release.  He followed it that same year with "By The Time I Get To Phoenix," marking the first in a string of collaborative hits penned by renowned songwriter Jimmy Webb that also includes such classics as "Wichita Lineman," "Where's The Playground, Susie," and "Galveston."

In addition to hit singles, Campbell also released a remarkable run of gold and platinum certified albums, including 1967's Gentle On My Mind, the first of seven consecutive collections to hit #1 onBillboard's "Country Albums" chart.  Among them are full-length favorites like 1967's By The Time I Get To PhoenixBobbie Gentry & Glen Campbell and the 2x-platinum certified Wichita Lineman (both released in 1968), and 1969's Galveston.

As if his musical career weren't enough, Campbell also drew acclaim as an actor and TV personality, with credits that include 1969's True Grit (earning him a Golden Globe nomination as "Most Promising Newcomer") and four seasons as host of CBS' The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour.  The highly rated variety series saw Campbell joined by a spectacular assortment of stars - including John Wayne, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Cream, Judy Collins - while also introducing some of country music's greatest artists to a wide national audience.

1975 saw the release of Campbell's biggest crossover triumph, "Rhinestone Cowboy," which earned RIAA gold certification while topping both Billboard's "Hot 100" and "Hot Country Singles" charts. Two years later saw Campbell repeating the feat with the gold certified, #1 smash, "Southern Nights," marking his fifth-ever country chart-topper as well as his seventh on Billboard's "Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks" tally.

Though Campbell's life has taken many difficult turns, his faith and family have long enabled him to keep pushing forward, both as a touring superstar and acclaimed recording artist.  In 2008, he united with Ghost On The Canvas producer Julian Raymond for one of the most unique albums in his canon, Meet Glen Campbell.  The album found Campbell putting his inimitable stamp on songs by such artists as U2, Green Day, Tom Petty, Foo Fighters, and Jackson Browne, supported by members of Jane's Addiction, Jellyfish, and Cheap Trick.

Over the course of his astonishing career, Campbell can lay claim to six Top 20 albums and 21 Top 40 hit singles.  His track record as one of country music's greatest stars includes 27 Top 10 country classics spanning 22 years, as well as nine #1 country albums.

Campbell has also received a stunning array of honors, beginning in 1967 when he made history by winning multiple Grammy Awards in both the Country & Western and Pop categories: "Gentle On My Mind" was honored as "Best Country & Western Vocal Performance, Male" and "Best Country & Western Recording," while "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" was named "Best Vocal Performance, Male" and "Best Contemporary Male Solo Vocal Performance."  The following year saw Campbell earning yet another Grammy when By The Time I Get To Phoenix was named "Album of the Year" - the first country album to win the top award.  What's more, "Gentle On My Mind," "By The Time I Get To Phoenix," and "Wichita Lineman" have all since received the "Grammy Hall of Fame Award."

Among Campbell's many other honors are seven Academy of Country Music Awards (including "Top Male Vocalist" and "Album of the Year" in both 1967 and 1968), three American Music Awards (celebrating "Rhinestone Cowboy" and the album that bears its name), three Gospel Music Association Dove Awards, two Country Music Association Awards, and the UK's Q Award for "Q Legend."  In addition, Campbell has received the Academy of Country Music's prestigious "Pioneer Award" and has been inducted to both the Country Music Hall of Fame as well as the Musicians Hall of Fame (honoring his membership in The Wrecking Crew).

George Benson Returns with Guitar Man on October 4

Grammy-winning legend George Benson brings his guitar to the forefront in his newest album Guitar Man. The 12-song collection includes a mix of jazz and pop standards - some in a combo setting and some solo, but all of them tied together seamlessly by Benson's soulful and exploratory signature sound. Lending a hand on this recording is a solid team made up of veterans and newcomers alike - pianist Joe Sample, keyboardist and musical director David Garfield, bassist Ben Williams and drummer Harvey Mason. Williams is one of the hottest up-and-coming new artists on the jazz scene. Mason is a regular member of Fourplay, and a studio collaborator with Benson all the way back to Benson's 1976 blockbuster album, Breezin'.

In a career that spans five decades, more than 30 recordings as a leader and ten Grammy Awards, Benson has used his jazz roots as the foundation for an engaging mix of pop, R&B and other shades that add up to a style that appeals to a broad mainstream audience. Along the way, he has also established himself as a formidable jazz singer - one whose biggest career hits have showcased his vocals. But Guitar Man is just what the title implies - an album that highlights Benson's unparalleled guitar playing, perhaps more than any other album he has released in decades.

For the new project, the crew came together in the studio with a minimum of prior rehearsal time but an eagerness to jump in and lay down tracks in something very close to the live experience - what Benson describes as an "old school" approach. The impromptu sensibility comes across in the final product, much of which came together with minimal takes in a single day of recording.

"We figured that we would get the best energy if we went into the studio with some live musicians who are savvy and flexible," says Benson, "and boy, did we accomplish that."

On Guitar Man, Benson's mastery of the guitar is demonstrated in a variety of styles and settings, all with legendary jazz roots. The opening track "Tenderly" is a solo guitar track that serves as a reminder that Benson is one guitar man with sufficient technical and interpretive skills to be a band unto himself. The second song is an intriguing rendition of Lennon and McCartney's "I Want To Hold Your Hand." Along with Benson on nylon-string guitar and Garfield on piano are guitarists Paul Jackson Jr. and Ray Fuller; bassist Freddie Washington; drummer Oscar Seaton, Jr. (who regularly tours with Benson); violinist Charlie Bisharat; and flutist/clarinetist Dan Higgins. All come together to create a fully orchestrated sound that casts one of the most simplistic of the Beatles' early love ballads into something full-bodied and engaging.

The remainder of the set consists of either solo guitar tracks or Benson backed by the aforementioned five-man team, which lays down an easygoing rendition of Stevie Wonder's "My Cherie Amour." Benson delivers the lyrics in his own engaging vocal style that includes a healthy dose of his trademark scatting guitar accompaniment.

Other highlights include a rollicking version of the Champs' 1958 instrumental hit, "Tequila," followed a couple tracks later by "My One and Only Love," which opens with a 16-bar solo jazz guitar intro that segues into a sweet vocal ballad. Benson delivers a playful straightahead rendition of "Paper Moon" with the quartet, followed by a solo guitar rendition of "Danny Boy" (one of the few times, if ever, that a guitar sounds like bagpipes). In the final stretch, Benson and Garfield set up a lush guitar-and-piano arrangement of the smoky standard, "Since I Fell For You," with Benson once again stepping up to the mic for an emotional delivery of the song's impassioned lyrics.

Benson has never been one to shy away from innovation or experimentation. For this guitar man, putting a jazz spin on pop standards - not just on this recording but throughout his career - is less of a taboo when you're willing to dispense with labels and the limitations that come with them.

"People categorize things because they need to find someplace to put them on their shelf," he says. "It's all music to me. I think a lot of pop tunes that were very big in the United States many years ago were recorded by jazz musicians playing in the background. Most of the Motown records were recorded that way. Those guys were jazz musicians who were living in Detroit and were called to do a job, and they did it very well...I try to do the same thing. I try to make it sound like it's natural, because to me it is. There are only two kinds of music, good and bad. There are a lot of things in between, but they're eventually going to fall on one side or the other of that equation."

George Benson will be touring in support of Guitar Man. The live shows will feature Benson's masterful guitar playing, and Benson and his band will be performing classic George Benson hits along with an acoustic presentation of a few songs from Guitar Man.

Mocean Worker - 'Candygram For Mowo!'

MOCEAN WORKER Delivers The Feel-Good Jams With CANDYGRAM FOR MOWO!

First single "Shooby Shooby Do Yah!" available now | Listen & Share here

With special guests Lyrics Born, Bill Frisell, Charlie Hunter, Mindi Abair, John Ellis, Steven Bernstein, Hal Willner & Rahsaan Roland Kirk

Available September 27 on MOWO! Inc.

It's been four years since we last heard from our favorite fast-talking, electro-funk, party-jams beat-maker Adam Dorn a.k.a. Mocean Worker. Since then tough economics have turned tougher, smug indie bands have become smugger and raving mad religious fanatics have grown, well, raving madder. What the world could use in these troubling times is some good ol' fashioned, happy days are here again, get up on the good foot grooves. Mocean Worker--who has built a reputation for exactly that over a ten-year plus career as a recording artist, songwriter, remixer, DJ, bassist and more--returns made to order with his sixth studio album, Candygram For Mowo!

From the opening salvo of the record's first track "Shooby Shooby Do Yah!" in which 1930s big band horns are met by the syncopated rattle of a tambourine, it's apparent that the Mocean Worker feel-good brand is intact.  Joined by a divers cast of special guests, including Lyrics Born, Mindy Abair, Bill Frisell, Charlie Hunter, John Ellis, Hal Willner and Rahsaan Roland Kirk,Mowo! brings the funk in all manner of delectable shapes and sizes. Whether crossing swing era rave-ups with '70s rare groove ("Do Like Ya Like"), Les McCann meets Marvin Gaye-flavored house party, soul jazz ("Sistas & Bruthas"), North Cali hip-hop with '50s hard bop ("My Own Little World") or injecting deep house with Nuyorican rhythms ("Out There In The Random"), the beats are infectious, the hooks irresistible and the attitude always cheeky.

In Mocean Worker's own words, "These ain't good times, so why not have something that makes us feel good?"

Candygram For Mowo! is indeed what our collective sweet tooth craves.

Walter Trout Returns To The Road For 27 Date Coast-To-Coast Run

Walter Trout continues his active worldwide touring schedule with a two-month run across the U.S. that will begin on August 6th in Mammoth Lakes, CA.   The visionary roots singer, songwriter and guitarist has been out promoting his 20th album COMMON GROUND, with appearances throughout Europe and the U.S. over the past year.

Trout's compelling music resides in a territory that unites the worlds of blues, rock and pure sonic adventurism, where inspiration and technique meet to create a unique soulful language.  He spends much of his life bridging the U.S. and Europe, where he is so well-known and respected that the U.K.'s BBC Radio One places the Stratocaster master at number six on their list of the Top 20 guitarists of all time.  Legendary BBC disc jockey Bob Harris, in his book "The Whispering Years," calls Trout: "The World's greatest rock guitarist."  Recently, Trout's COMMON GROUND was honored with both a nomination for BMA Blues / Rock Album of the Year by the Blues Foundation, and inclusion in Classic Rock Magazine's 2010 Top 10 list.

The title of Trout's latest COMMON GROUND is also a prayer.  He sings "If there's a place where truth can still be found, Lord lead us to the common ground.  The singer shared, "I am blown away by the polarization and cruelty in the world today.  It goes beyond my understanding.  I wrote the lyrics to that song as an attempt to come to terms with that, and as a wish that somehow – regardless of our faiths, nationalities and politics – we can find a place where truth and compassion can take us beyond our differences."

Trout has been on this journey since 1965 when his brother brought the debut from the Paul Butterfield Blues Band in to the family's New Jersey home.   He played in local band, and then moved to Los Angeles in 1973 where he supported legends that include John Lee Hooker, Big Mama Thornton, Finis Tasby, Pee Wee Crayton, Lowell Fulson, Percy Mayfield and Joe Tex, assimilating a wide variety of the blues.  In 1981, Trout joined the remaining members of the formative 60's blues-rock group Canned Heat.  After, he entered the true turning point in his career; beginning a five year tenure in 1984 with British blues giant John Mayall's Bluesbreakers.  Trout began his solo career in 1989 and from his first release LIFE IN THE JUNGLE, has had a prolific and widely embraced career in Europe.  His U.S. solo debut came in 1998, when WALTER TROUT was issued which immediately established him as a staple in the American blues scene as well.  Trout offers, "In a sense, I've almost created my own genre.  I've assimilated so many styles and so many influences from the great adventure of American music.  I love Jeff Beck just as much as I love B.B. King.  I believe in telling stories and honestly searching for the truth.  And I have no interest in stifling my creativity.  My quest in all this is that I'd really love to be able to do it all."

Trout's itinerary includes appearances in:

Recently, KCRW offered a free download of the band's debut single, "1957" on July 21st, and that evening the band played a free show at the Hammer Museum with Grouplove as part of the "Also I Like To Rock" summer concert series, presented by The Hammer Museum and KCRW and curated by Buzz Bands LA.

On August 27th, Milo Greene will release their debut single, "1957"/"Silent Way," as a 7" and play the Hotel CafĂ© stage at the Sunset Junction Street Fair in Silverlake, CA. Band members Robbie Arnett, Andrew Heringer and Marlana Sheetz met while studying at the University of California-Irvine, where they created a character named Milo Greene, sending out emails in his name to promote their creative endeavors. After graduation, Heringer and Sheetz moved to the San Francisco area for a time. Despite the distance, they began demoing songs with Arnett. As the songs came together, Curtis Marrero, who had played with Arnett in Links, and Graham Fink (formerly of the Outline) were enticed to join and the quartet took the name Milo Greene.

Suzy Bogguss Revives Folk Favorites with American Folk Songbook

Suzy Bogguss had a revelation on stage with Garrison Keillor in 2008. Everyone loves to sing along on "Red River Valley" – except the children who somehow don't know the song. Folk songs are the scrapbook of the American experience, but as music education fades from our public schools, she worried; these beautiful melodies are in danger of being overlooked. She resolved to record these timeless songs in an updated but reverent way – so that everyone can sing along on "Red River Valley."

And who better than the golden throated Suzy? The platinum selling songstress already has a full bookshelf of Grammy and CMA awards and now with the release of American Folk Songbook she can put her own book up there too. After an initial release with Cracker Barrel, The CD and companion Songbook are available everywhere today.

As Suzy writes in the introduction to the book: "Music has always been my purest joy even as a child. One of my favorite memories is my grade-school music teacher pounding on the piano and leading the class in rousing renditions of folk songs from all around the world. In the summer of 2008 I toured with the brilliant and engaging Garrison Keillor. The energy that passed between the audience and Garrison was overwhelming at times. Several thousand people standing and singing together—old songs, hymns, the Beatles and the Everly Brothers. People of all ages, sharing music. Ahhh, pure joy."

But Bogguss was not content to present the songs as dusty museum pieces, instead she chose to breath new life into them with contemporary arrangements and a crack squad of Nashville's acoustic A-Listers. Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan, Pat Bergeson, Charlie Chadwick and Jeff Taylor all join the band for Suzy's self-produced project. Ultimately though it's the voice that lovingly weaves through the guitars and mandolins to find the new in these old songs. As John Lomax III writes in the forward to the book, 'Prepare yourself for enchantment! ...This work is, in a word, delightful!"

Suzy says she modeled the songbook after her "good old 5th grade songbook." The hardcover, 96-page book is filled with illustrations, fascinating historical stories about the songs, easy to read sheet music arrangements for piano, voice and guitar as well as personal insights and anecdotes from Bogguss. Her intent from the beginning was to make the book attractive to music lovers and musicians at every level. Again from her introduction: "that way, younger generations could share these slowly fading gems with their families and tell their stories of how they learned a few chords on the guitar or a couple of favorites to play at family gatherings."

Cracker Barrel, with its devotion to families and appreciation for authentic Americana was the obvious choice for the initial release.

American Folk Songbook is the natural progression of an artist who has demonstrated skill and passion for all types of music in her career. Songs like "Aces," "Drive South," "Someday Soon," "Outbound Plane" and "Letting Go" took her to the top of the country music charts. Along the way she won raves from critics and peers including winning a GRAMMY in 2005 for Traditional Folk Album, the Country Music Association's Horizon Award in 1992 and album of the Year Award in 1994.

2007's Billboard Jazz Chart topping Sweet Danger, the universally praised album,Swing recorded in 2003 with Ray Benson of Asleep At The Wheel and Simpatico, her beloved collaboration with Chet Atkins showed the world Bogguss was willing to both embrace tradition while continuing to grow and challenge herself as an artist. However, it is an appreciation for tradition that really shines through on American Folk Songbook.  The album is filled with songs that are the very fabric of American musical history and Bogguss reclaims this history and revives it with a fresh and beautiful take on classics like "Shenandoah," "Wayfaring Stranger," "Ol' Dan Tucker,"  "Beautiful Dreamer" and of course, "Red River Valley." Everybody sing along!

Stax Remasters feature Rufus Thomas, the Dramatics and Shirley Brown

In 1968, on the heels of the label's severance from Atlantic Records, Stax Records president Al Bell decided to initiate a massive 28-LP release program that would auger the label's return to the top. The initiative fostered a new generation of Stax hitmakers including the Dramatics and Shirley Brown. And, it proved an artistically and commercially fertile time for Stax veteran Rufus Thomas.

On September 13, 2011, Concord Music Group, as part of its Stax Remasters series , will reissue Rufus Thomas's Do the Funky Chicken, the Dramatics' Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get and Shirley Brown's Woman to Woman — each featuring a chart-topping title track. All three reissues feature 24-bit remastering, rare bonus tracks, and new liner notes to frame the recordings in historical context.

Rufus Thomas: Do the Funky Chicken:
Although Rufus and his daughter Carla Thomas had given Satellite Records (precursor to Stax) its first hit in 1960, followed in turn by Rufus's solo hit "Walkin' the Dog," his star had faded by the late '60s. The self-proclaimed "world's oldest teenager" (age 51 in 1968) found inspiration in 1968 when he recorded Eddie Floyd's "Funky Mississippi," backed by Booker T. & the MGs and the Memphis Horns, for an album that never saw the light of day titled May I Have Your Ticket Please? A year later, Thomas entered the studio again — this time with his son Marvell Thomas on keyboards and members of the Bar-Kays — to record "Do the Funky Chicken." The song was a smash, reaching #5 R&B and #28 Pop. Rufus was back on top, and the album Do the Funky Chicken was hailed as a career highlight. The follow-up, a two-sided hit of the menacing voodoo funk of "Sixty Minute Man" backed with the gospel-inflected "The Preacher and the Bear," made it to #42 R&B. The reissue is rounded out by "Funky Mississippi," "Funky Way" and  "Itch and Scratch," the last recorded not at Stax but rather at Jackson, Mississippi's Malaco Studios. Stax historian Rob Bowman contributed liner notes.

The Dramatics: Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get:
In diversifying the A&R focus of Stax, Al Bell brought in Detroit producer Don Davis to work with core artists Carla Thomas and Johnnie Taylor. He brought with him a Motor City vocal group called the Dramatics. Davis turned to fellow Detroit producer and songwriter Tony Hestor to work with the group. Hestor wrote a great song with "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get" and crafted an extraordinary arrangement as well. Annotator Bowman writes, "The slight Latin feel fit the first wave of disco like a glove while the use of claves and congas combined with a fuzzed lead guitar line and seraphonous strings and horns." The chemistry of artist, song, and arrangement drove the record all the way to #3 R&B and #9 Pop in the summer of 1971 on the Volt label. The follow-up was "In the Rain," of which then-lead vocalist Ron Banks recalls, "We looked at each other and said, 'Whoa, that's a smash.' And for once we were right." The song went to #5 Pop. The Whatcha See Is Whatcha Getreissue contains no fewer than nine bonus tracks including charting hits "Fell for You" and "Hey You! Get Off My Mountain," both recorded in Detroit instead of Memphis. The closer "Hum a Song (From Your Heart)" was produced at Atlantic South Criterion Studios by the legendary production triumvirate of Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd, and Arif Mardin.

Shirley Brown: Woman to Woman
"Phenomenon means having your first single, 'Woman to Woman,' sell a million in its first eight weeks," wrote Stax employee Deanie Parker in her liner notes for Shirley Brown's Woman to Woman album, released in 1974 on Stax's Truth imprint.  The East St. Louis native came to Stax by way of Albert King, who'd discovered her when she was all of 14.  When matched with the powerful James Banks, Eddie Marion, and Henderson Thigpen composition "Woman to Woman," Brown hit a nerve with female listeners. In a spoken intro, Brown said: "Hello, may I speak to Barbara? Barbara, this is Shirley. You might not know who I am, but the reason I am calling you is because I was going through my old man's pockets this morning. And I just happened to find your name and number." After presenting her case, Brown sang earnestly about not letting anyone else "break up my happy home" because "I love that man and he's mine." The song notched #1 R&B and #22 Pop.  A follow-up, "It Ain't No Fun" by Fredrick Knight, charted #94 Pop.  Songs by Knight, Sir Mack Rice, and the late Jerry Ragovoy round out the original album release. The reissue contains five bonus tracks by writers Carolyn Franklin, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, and Stevie Wonder. After Stax's closure, Brown signed to Arista and with Stax's co-founder Jim Stewart and Bettye Crutcher producing, reaching #15 with "Blessed is the Woman (With a Man Like Mine)" and has more recently recorded for Malaco.

About Stax Records:
Stax Records is synonymous with Southern soul music. Originally known as Satellite, the Memphis company was founded in 1959 by Jim Stewart and his sister, Estelle Axton, and took its new name in 1961 from the first two letters of their last names. Among the many artists who scored hits on Stax and its Volt subsidiary during the '60s were Rufus and Carla Thomas, Booker T. & the MGs, Sam and Dave, Johnnie Taylor, Albert King, and Otis Redding. Redding's death in 1967 signaled the end of the first Stax era (to which Atlantic retains distribution rights). Subsequently the company spawned a new crop of hitmakers, among them Isaac Hayes, the Staple Singers, the Dramatics, and Shirley Brown. In June 1977, a year-and-a-half after Stax went bankrupt, the company's masters were purchased by Fantasy, Inc. Concord Music Group purchased and reactivated Stax in 2004 to release both new soul recordings and catalog reissues
